Most of spartan men were to busy training for warriors, so Spartans used slaves and non-citizens to produce goods. They turned the people they captured into helots, or slaves. These slaves didn't have the same rights as normal social day citizens.
Athenian's Economy
The Athenian economy was based on trade. They relied on trading because the land all around them didn't provide enough food for all the cities people. They were close to the sea and it had a good harbor. They achieved wood from Italy and grain from Egypt. In exchange they traded honey, oil, silver, and painted pottery. They bought and sold goods at the agora. Most of their clothes were made at home. Their money had an image of a god on the side of the coin.
